Mechanical devices that reproduced the movements and looks of people or animals. The first important constructions of automatons coincide with the development of tower clocks (the puppet on the Maurizio Tower in Orvieto in 1351, the Moors on the clock tower in Venice from 1477). In the 18th century, some really spectacular results were achieved.
